Young man survives “brain death” and avoids “organ donation”.
17 year old Steven Thorpe of Warwickshire, UK, was declared “brain dead” by four doctors in Feb 2008, only to make an unexpected recovery and leave hospital seven weeks later. Today Steven is 21, greatly improved and studying Accountancy at college.
Four doctors thought Steven had no chance of survival and declared him “brain-dead” ...
... but Steven's father and mother would not give up on him!
His troubles began when he was a passenger in a vehicle that struck a runaway horse. One of his friends died in the accident, and Steven was rushed to hospital suffering severe injuries to his face, head and arm. Doctors at University Hospital, Coventry, placed Steven into a medically induced coma and performed a craniotomy to help alleviate any swelling on his brain. But the team of four physicians felt that there was no chance of Steven surviving and declared him “brain-dead”. They told his parents to take him off life support and “You need to start thinking about organ donations”.
But Steven's father and mother would not give up on him. They rejected suggestions that his life support be turned off, and insisted on getting another opinion from an independent GP and a neurosurgeon. These concluded that Steven was not “brain-dead”, as they detected some brain wave activity. Reluctantly, the hospital doctors agreed to bring him out of the chemically-induced coma to see if he could survive unaided. Two weeks later Steven Thorpe woke up. After another five weeks he left the hospital alive.
Steven told the BBC:
It's very worrying to think that...more than one specialist has written me off pretty much and I am lucky to be here really due to having a second opinion.” In the Daily Mail (UK) he added: “Hopefully it can help people to see that you should never give up.
